Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk (dairy or plant-based alternatives)
  • 48 thin pretzel sticks
  • 24 mini chocolate chips or candy eyes
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Beat brown sugar, oil, eggs, vanilla, and milk in a large mixing bowl until well combined.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  5. Roll dough into 24 balls, each about 1.5 inches in diameter, and flatten them slightly.
  6. Break pretzel sticks in half and press 4 pieces into each side of the cookie dough.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are set but centers remain slightly soft.
  8. While cookies are still warm, gently press mini chocolate chips or candy eyes into the front of each spider body.

Notes

Keep extra pretzel sticks handy as they tend to break during handling. Store cookies in airtight containers at room temperature for up to one week.
